Travelling to Bali

Health & Safety Tips

Bali is a safe and welcoming destination. A few simple precautions will keep your holiday healthy and stress-free.

Food & water

Don't drink tap water — use bottled or filtered water, including for brushing your teeth if you have a sensitive stomach. 'Bali belly' is usually caused by unfamiliar food or water; choose busy restaurants, wash your hands and pack rehydration salts just in case.

Sun, sea & surf

  • The equatorial sun is strong — use reef-safe SPF 50 and drink plenty of water
  • Swim between the red-and-yellow flags; rip currents on the west coast can be powerful
  • Wear reef shoes on rocky and coral beaches
  • Book water activities with licensed operators that provide life jackets

Monkeys & animals

The monkeys at Uluwatu and Ubud's Monkey Forest are wild and quick to grab sunglasses, hats and phones. Keep bags zipped, don't carry food and never feed or tease them. If scratched or bitten, seek medical advice for a rabies vaccine promptly.

Insurance & medical care

Buy comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation and any activities you plan (rafting, diving, scooters). International-standard hospitals and clinics operate in Denpasar, Kuta, Nusa Dua and Ubud.

Emergency numbers

  • Police: 110
  • Ambulance: 118 or 119
